| GIXs situation in France |

Before LyonIX...All GIXs were in Paris. In Lyon, the pipes existed but the Internet was slow. It was difficult for a company to change the transit provider. Local firms couldn't benefit from a real « inter-net ». In Lyon : FO, DSL, FH, LL and cable were available but there wasn't a real broadband because everything transited through Paris. By creating LyonIX, Internet and Telecommunications companies can interconnect and benefit from better traffic conditions in terms of price and performance. Some companies which have important bandwidth needs have even chosen to remain in Lyon rather then setteling in the U.S. in order to interconnect to LyonIX.
Situation today in FranceSeveral Internet trafic exchange points exist in France (Sfinx Renater, Parix France Telecom, France-IX, Fr-IX, Pouix, et Mixt). Lyon and the Rhône-Alpes Region are behind other similar european cities/regions when when it comes ot Internet infrastructure technologies. However, Lyon has a good Telecom infrastrcuture. 100% of the Grand Lyon territory is covered by the xDSL and the BLR, there are some optical fiber operators (Colt, MCI, Neuf-Cegetel, Completel). The Rhône department cable network which is managed, today, by Numericable. Projects are being developed in : Strasbourg, Marseille, Nancy ... We think the local GIXs are necessary to avoid transiting by Paris, when we use internet on a local scale. They are most valuable for the local internet traffic.
